About · Brien Wood

The hardest things were never
meant to be faced alone.

I came to this work because I believe the deepest changes don't happen through insight alone — they happen in the presence of another person, in the moment something long-protected is finally met. That conviction has shaped everything since.

Brien Wood, couples and individual therapist in Seattle
Brien WoodLMHC · LMFT

For more than twenty years I've integrated three traditions: Gestalt therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and the contemporary science of attachment and emotion. I don't study relational healing from a distance. I practice it daily — with couples in crisis, with individuals carrying patterns that no longer serve them, and with the slow, patient work of helping a nervous system learn that connection can be safe.

I also teach this work. I co-founded the Seattle Gestalt & Attachment training program, where I train other therapists in the experiential, attachment-based approaches that create lasting change — work that sharpens my own practice as much as it shapes theirs. But the teaching has always been in service of the real thing: sitting with you, in the room.

Clinical Experience

The shape of the work.

Private Practice · 2005–Present
Nearly two decades with individuals, couples, and families navigating attachment wounds, relationship crisis, infidelity, communication breakdown, and the deeper work of personal change. I welcome LGBTQ+ and straight partnerships, monogamous and consensually non-monogamous relationships, married and unmarried couples, and individuals 18 and older at every stage.
Co-Founder · Seattle Gestalt & Attachment
I co-founded and co-lead a postgraduate training program for licensed clinicians, teaching the experiential, attachment-based methods at the center of my work.
Clinical Supervisor
I mentor and supervise associate therapists, helping them deepen their grasp of attachment dynamics, therapeutic presence, and the nuanced art of relational repair.
Bringing Baby Home Educator · Gottman Institute
I've led workshops helping new and expectant parents build secure attachment with their children while protecting their connection as a couple through one of life's biggest transitions.
Workshop Leader & Presenter
I offer educational workshops on couples therapy, attachment science, and relational healing — for therapists seeking advanced training and for the public.
Family Therapist · Ruth Dykeman Children's Center
Early in my career, working with children and families through complex developmental and relational challenges — the foundation of my integrative, systemic approach.
