Questions You Might Have About Therapy

What you can expect in session

In our sessions you can expect to be treated with respect and care. I will provide psycho education about the causes of distress in relationships and how to avoid them. More importantly, we will look at your relationship in depth and determine what is working for you, and what needs improvement. I will focus my attention on the process of what you both are doing and how you are doing it. Sometimes this process may lead us to behavior that is rooted in experiences of the past. Often people develop adaptive ways of relating at a young age that serves a vital purpose in that time, but are anachronistic in the present, meaning that they are incongruous and no longer compatible with the needs of the moment. Together we can explore and experiment with new ways of responding to your needs that will increase the likelihood of their completion. Our work together will be determined by your specific situation and goals.

As therapy progresses couples usually notice that they have a clearer understanding of themselves, their partner, and how and what they both do to contribute to the negative feedback loop that leaves them feeling unknown, hurt, and alone in the relationship. This usually leads to a much closer relationship where couples are more responsive to each others needs, feel more known and secure in the relationship, are able to repair an escalating conflict, and can express their complaints softly and more lovingly.

How long does therapy take?

Our sessions are tailored specifically to meet your needs. Depending on your goals and circumstances therapy can be as brief as three sessions or as long as several years. Typically in the early stages of therapy, sessions are once a week for 50 or 85 minutes. This can be adjusted to every other week or as needed as therapy progresses. I will support you in the therapeutic process for as long or as little as I am useful to you.

How much does it cost

$120 for a fifty minute session.

$170 for an eighty-five minute session.

$60 for students

If my standard fee is too financially burdensome for you, we can discuss a sliding scale.
